Description: A beautifully made antique late 19th century ladies writing made in England by the Jennens & Betteridge company. This Victorian style box is made of paper maché and finished with a black lacquer and hand-painted in an elaborately applied gold scroll motif. The hinged top is decorated with an eglomise glass top further which is enhanced with jewels. The inside of the box is finished with a brilliant red velvet-like covered writing surface and compartments for what once held inkwell bottles and other instruments to write with. There is also a hidden compartment under the center section. Writing desk measures 13.25" wide 11.25" deep and 4" high. Condition is very good considering age.
