Description: Pop artist Keith Haring (1958-1990) was an iconic painter whose artwork emerged from the N.Y. city graffftii subculture of the 1980's. His animated art has become a widely recognized visual language. Haring was a friend of Andy Warhol. Haring at one time had a N.Y. storefront gallery called the "Pop Shop" from where he sold his artistic creations to walk-in buyers. He studied at the N.Y. School of Professional Art and the School of Visual Arts, also in New York city. Works by Keith Haring are in many important international and national collections including: The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; the L.A,County Museum of Art; the Whitney Mueseum of Art, N.Y.; and the Museum of Modern Art, N.Y. The artwork for sale is an original mixed-media pop art painting on a large sheet of paper. The medium appears to be black magic marker and gouache. The piece is signed in the lower right corner, "K. Haring" and dated "86" with the artist's cypher next to the date ( photo 2). The artwork measures 15 and 1/2" high and 23" across. Primary colors are black, blue, green, tan and red. The image depicts arms and hands pulling open either a stomach or a satchel of money. Interestingly, each of the green bills being exposed reads "$0". There is "bleed through" (photo 6) showing the indelible marker lines through the paper. This indicates that the artwork is not printed but an original work. This painting was purchased by the seller in 2012 but it was never matted, framed or displayed. It has sat in the print drawer for more than a decade. Astute art buyers know that artwork by Keith Haring is often fake as (his style is fairly easy to duplicate) and that there are hundreds of fake Harings in the art marketplace today. Seller cannot guarantee the authenticity of this fine painting because there was no paperwork at the time it was purchased, just a receipt. This is a rather uncommon image and it is on a sheet of paper that is much larger than most of the fake images. The artwork is being sold as "Attributed to Keith Haring" on the basis of style and signature.
