Description: Large Fossilised Fern Trunk. Lepidodendron? Carboniferous? 280 x 170mm. 24kg. A large section of what I originally thought was fossilised tree trunk, but have been advised that this is the fossil of a fern from the Carboniferous period. This is apparently evidenced not only by the pattern to the "bark", but also the thickness of the bark which is not very thick at all. This can best be seen in the third to last photo where at some point in the past a small piece has been knocked off revealing the thickness of the bark at probably about 3mm - quite this I am told.The big unknown with this piece is that it has no verifiable history. It has been collected but its origin was not recorded.Also despite extensive searches, I have not been able to identify exactly what specific tree / fern / plant this is.So definitely needs some research. This is big and heavy! At its longest diameter it is 280mm being about 240mm across the other way. I stands about 170mm tall. And it weighs a whopping 24kg! I can meet to handover with 12 mile radius of Bakewell, including J29 of M1. I have offered postage but collection is preferable due to size and weight.
