Description: The central figure in this Tibetan thangka depicts Padmasambhava who is a major figure in Tibetan Buddhism. He is shown as an ascetic Mahasidda, or quasi Buddhist Saint. The secondary scenes shown around him are events from his life. The group of 8 secondary figures at the top include another image of Padmasambhava in the center with figures that recount his spiritual lineage. The painting dates from the end of the 19th century, possibly early 20thh century. . Tapestry size is 63.5'' x 36.5''Painting size is 23" x 33.5" mounted on what looks like red and then gold silk border. The inscription is related to the consecration and vivifies the central image it does not provide any historical information related to the patron or where it was painted. The Inscriptions on the back are translated as - "Blessing from creating this story telling thangka of the powerful Vajra,Who embodies the knowledge, compassion and power of all Buddhas of ten directions and three times.May all sentient beings swiftly achieve the state Vajradhara." Sarva-Mangalam (An auspicious phrase generally meaning “Happiness to all Beings") There is a thumbprint on the back of the Lama or priest who presumably consecrated the painting for use. That is a rare and nice detail. Above the thumbprint is the inscription "Om ah hung" a Buddhist mantra that represents the body, speech, and mind, and is said to have the power to purify the environment and all beings within it:Om: Represents the body, and is said to purify perceptionsAh: Represents speech, and is said to purify soundsHung: Represents the mind, and is said to purify thoughts and emotions Chanting the mantra is said to help release guilt and shame, and to commit to doing better in the future. It is also said to represent the possibility of transformative blessings from all the Buddhas.
