Description: LARGE 3 3/8" DIAMETER VICTORIAN PRETTY LADY CELLULOID DESK PAPER WEIGHT WITH MIRROR by GAST ~ ST. LOUIS / MARKED 1907 This is a large, heavy, celluloid desk top paperweight with a handy mirror on the obverse side. The image is of a classic Victorian period pretty young lady, and this desk accessory / paperweight / mirror would have been intended for a Gentleman who had an appreciation for the ladies and would display this on his office desk for other Gentlemen to admire. The mirror is dated 1907, is large sized (3 3/8" in diameter x 3/8" thick), and quite heavy for its size at 7.2 ounces or 308 grams. The rim is Maker Marked "GAST, ST. LOUIS" on the rim, and some additional printing on the opposite side of the rim that is partially cut off by the edge, but the patent date of 06 - 26 - 07 is clearly visible with a loupe. The mirror is in very good condition with very light scattered foxing that mostly shows as thin hairline random pattern near one edge. The mirror is secure in the thin black metal frame which the top image celluloid folds over. The curved celluloid top is in very good condition, with good color and the gold advertising around the borders is intact. The top lettering reads, "Abstracts Title Insurance Certificates of Title", and the bottom reads, "TITLE INSURANCE & INVESTMENTS CO.", "1008 A STREET, TACOMA, WASH." in two lines. As is common, the top has a textured surface from naturally occurring aging and shrinking of the celluloid. This is not visible when looking straight down on the paperweight but is clearly visible when the top is turned in the light to reflect the random small bumps in the surface, and can also be felt when running your fingers over the top surface. This aging to the surface is normal, and certainly not distracting to the overall quality and condition of the top image. Note, it is very difficult to photograph a curved domed object that reflects light, so look at all the images to see that one image may have a reflection that is not present in the other images; and some of the images are taken at an angle minimize this.
