Lake Side Press Classics - American West, Autobiography

Description: Lakeside Press and Lakeside Classics - General Information (various sources)The RR Donnelley Company produce fine-quality books under the Lakeside Press, a Chicago publishing company which was best known for its high quality editions like these LAKESIDE CLASSICS, a series of fine reprints that were annually produced at Christmas time by R.R. Donnelley. This tradition began in 1903 by Thomas E. Donnelley, the President of the Company, who wanted to create a gift to represent his own company's product and which would not be available in the open market. At Christmas time, they gave each of the company employees a copy, making the series valued collectors items. Over time, the basic format of the books has remained the same since its inception, as a hardcover, cloth wrapped and gold embossed. The subject matters included American history. Many of the early volumes contained speeches and writings of noted Americans. The themes of the books include Civil War, the Old West, exploration and frontier life. In the 1990s, several changes were introduced, partly to acknowledge the company's global markets, and narratives by Americans abroad were included. In the first volume provided to employees in 1903, Thomas E. Donnelley, wrote "If, in a modest way this volume conveys the idea that machine-made books are not a crime against art, and that books may be plain but good, and good though not costly, its mission has been accomplished."An admirer in 1923 wrote the the printing, binding, and finishings were all done by the apprentice class to "illustrate the ideals of a well-made book," and that "not only are these books well made, but they contain historical works, autobiographies, and early travels unforgettable to him who loves this fair land." He concluded already then that the series was becoming "an institution near and dear to the collector of books of intrinsic value and beauty. Some changes were made over time, for example, in 1995, the title page was changed from "Christmas" to "December." For the redesign in 2003, they engaged Bruce Campbell (The Library of America), and the gold framing on the cover was restored and typeface was changed from Bulmer to Garamond. By 2015, the series included 113 volumes. The series is divided in sections and colors of books:Green Lakeside Press Classics dated 1903-1927 Red Lakeside Press Classics dated 1928-1952Blue Lakeside Press Classics dated 1953-1977Brown Lakeside Press Classics dated 1978-2002Light Green Lakeside Press Classics dated 2003-presentSeller's InformationThank you for visiting our store which has a high volume of vintage books and magazines as well as field guides of the American West.
