Description: JUAN GRIS, James Thrall Soby, 1958 1st edition published by The Museum Of Modern Art (New York) in collaboration with The Minneapolis Institute Of Arts, San Francisco Museum Of Art, and LOs Angeles County Museum, Selected Bibliography by Bernard Karpel; 9.75 x 8.5-inch linen-clad HB with embossed gold lettering at fron and spine, glossy DJ, 128 pp. printed on quality white glossy stock which looks great at age 66, matte-finished, semi-thick end papers are faintly toned at edges; strong VG+ overall condition (book is near-excellent - clean and tightly bound, straight corners, bright covers and interior pp.; DJ is very good - clean and fully intact with curling at upper edges and lighter curling at bottom front edge; also very light toning at upper front edge, more toning at upper rear and vertical edges; both flaps are curled but absent chips, tears or creases; $5.50 at upper front flap) Spain's Juan Gris, born Jose Victoriano Gonzalez, was - along with countryman Pablo Picasso and Frenchmen Georges Rraque and Fernand Leger, one of the four masters of the early 20th-century Modernist Art movement Cubism. Although he died at age 40 in 1927, he left behind a significant body of work. There are 120 illustrations which track his growth as an artist. Most are from his long period as a Cubist master. Although the majority are in B&W, there are at least two dozen in color. I included his portrait of a young woman (my 19th photo) as a reminder that like Picasso he was a world-class "representational " painter before he immersed himself in Cubism. The author previously wrote GEORGIO AND CHIRICO, the acclaimed history of the Italian artists who laid groundwork of Surrealism. There are many copies on eBay in lesser condition. The cheapest is good with 6 accompanying photos. It's $17/10 with free shipping. Mine's notably better. The Buy-It-Now price f $24.00 includes shipping bubble-wrapped in a cardboard box via media mail, which takes around 7 days with tracking, less in California.
