Description: Josef Riedl Austria Tall Handled Ewer Stahl 1890-1918 Courting Couple Blue Gold Elegant Decorative TALL Handled EWER Pitcher or Vase, Decorated by Josef Riedl in Giesshubel, Bohemia, Austria, Transfer of Friedrich Stahl's Woman Spying on COURTING COUPLE, GOLD on Rim & Handle, circa 1890-1918 DESCRIPTION: This beautiful tall handled ewer bears a transfer of a fantastic pictorial serenade by the artist Friedrich Stahl painted in the style called Fête Galante that was so popular in the late 1910’s to 1920’s. The overall quality of the design is quite professional and attributed to the studio of Josef Riedl. The beautiful courting scene is being spied upon by a woman in the background. This is enclosed in a cartouche outlined in sweeping, raised gold. The gold trim on the rim & handle accents the scalloped rim and the fancy lines of the ornate handle. There are numerous sprays of gold leaves scattered across the deep blue paint of the ewer. CONDITION: While this ewer is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects and no damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is definitely gold wear on the handle that shows the undercoat of light purple under the gold. The largest gold spray on the middle of the back has slight gold wear and one short spot of the raised gold nicked off. Overall, the gold trim is solid & glossy with only the most minor wear. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The ewer has a height of 13 7/8" and a widest diameter of 5 1/4". It sits firmly on a base of diameter 4 3/8". HISTORY/MARKS: From 1890-1944, Josef Riedl had a porcelain decorating studio in Giesshubel, Bohemia Austria (which is currently known as Stružná, Czech Republic). Riedl decorated beautiful and high quality pieces in the manner of Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Vienna; thus the bindenschild (beehive) mark was used as his mark. This is typically an overglaze blue mark. If the mark has Austria under it, it is attributed to the 1890-1918 time period by Robert E. Rontgen’s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present as mark #1434. Additionally, many of his pieces have transfers of work by famous artists such as Angelica Kauffmann and Friedrich Stahl. The German artist Friedrich Stahl (1863-1940) worked for the Schmidt & Co. Victoria Porcelain Factory in Altrohlau as well as some other porcelain factories in Karlsbad, Bohemia, which is now Czech Republic. The Victoria porcelain factory operated in the time period from 1883 until 1945. The region had many kaolin mines - a key component for making hard paste porcelain which was exported to the USA market especially prior to the Great depression in 1929. The Victoria porcelain factory was known for its high quality porcelain and is highly valued by collectors. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
