He worked on the railroads and at the Planter's Peanuts plant. He started drawing after his retirement as something to do. He used colored pencils and felt markers on paper or cardboard. His pictures are of stylized birds, moons, trees and suns. He was included in the exhibition "Folk Art" The Common Wealth of Virginia" and his work is included in the permanent collection of the Kentucky Folk Art Center and the St. James Place Folk Art Museum. His "studio" was the Hardee's restaurant in Suffolk. He became such a tourist attraction that Hardee's eventually gave him a certificate awarding him free breakfasts for life. There have been four exhibitions based on the Mullis collection. 2007 and titled "Amazing Grace: Self-Taught Artists from the Mullis Collection." 2009 and titled "Lord Love You: Works by RA Miller from the Mullis Collection." "All Creatures Great and Small," and Jundt Art Museum, Gonzaga University titled, "Amen, Amen: Religion and Southern Self-Taught Artists in the Mullis Collection."
