Jacob/Dec, 1 1873", in brown ink, 4x2½. John Jeremiah Jacob (1829-1893) was an American lawyer and educator who served as the 4th Governor of West Virginia from 1871 to 1877. A native of Green Spring, West Virginia, Jacob received his education at the Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He was a lawyer and school teacher before leaving to the University of Michigan where he took job as a professor in 1893. During the American Civil War, he served as Missouri lawyer, and following the war he returned to Romney to begin his law practice. After being elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1868, the Democrat began his gubernatorial campaign, winning the position in 1870. Within his 6 year term he helped build schools, train teachers and establish special educational centers for the mentally handicapped. He became a circuit judge following his years as Governor.
