Sometimes white stripes will appear in scans of photos that have large black areas. This striping is caused by the scanner. These stripes are not on the actual photograph. Movie photos (or stills) were produced in limited numbers, and sent from the studio's publicity department to select theaters and the contemporary newspaper wire services, which has led to them sometimes being referred to as "Wire Photos". These pictures were taken by some of the most talented photographers in the world, and are really works of art in their own right.
