Description: Up for bid is a large Benitoite specimen with good Long wave response from the California State Gem Mine in California. All Benitoite fluoresces Blue under SW UV light, however the LW response is quite variable. Some Benitoite specimens have no LW response and some have a very good LW response. This specimen clearly illustrates this variability. The front of this specimen has good coverage of Benitoite that fluoresces Blue SW but has little LW response. The back of the specimen doesnt have quite the Benitoite coverage but makes up for it with a very good Red LW response. Note that the LW Red fluorescence is best viewed with a Convoy high intensity LW flashlight or similar. First picture is the front under SW UV, second picture is the front under LW, and third picture is the front under white light. Next three pictures are the back in the same order. Benitoite is a very rare and desirable mineral. It is Californias state gem stone and gem quality material is only found at the Dallas Gem Mine and other close localities. All of these mines are now closed due to asbestos contamination from nearby asbestos mines. The only way to get the material now is to buy from old collections and prices have been continuously increasing!
