Description: A 1944 copy of the Jonathan Cape edition, the bloodlines of which go all the way back to the original 1916 edition. Just three years after Joyce's death, and published during the war he hated for having distracted the public from Finnegans Wake...in that sense, this copy feels like his own time on earth. The Cape editions are nicely typeset and agreeable to hold and read, unlike later editions in smaller and more anonymous type. The price here is not a whole lot more than the Penguin paperback and much more atmospheric. And the dust jacket is a nice bonus. I'll copypaste from the Condition field: Fresh green boards and just a very little wear at spine extremities; text is clean with a small gift inscription on ffep. The dust jacket is fair, with darkening spine, overall grubbiness, and chipping and fraying. Still shows 5 shilling price and a blurb from H.G. Wells, describing it as "a book to buy and read," which he meant less self-evidently than it sounds. Do read it, if you haven't, one way or another! And do re-read it if it's time to do so!
