Description: Jacques La Grange, 'The Magic is Ahead, 1870', color woodcut, 1934, edition 500. Signed and numbered '25/500' in pencil. A fine impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper, with margins (1 3/16 to 1 5/8 inches), in excellent condition. Image size 9 3/4 x 12 1/8 inches; sheet size 12 1/4 x 15 inches. Archivally sleeved, unmatted. From La Grange's series 'Drama and Color in the America's Cup Races'. La Grange’s depiction of the 1870 America’s Cup Race shows the 'Magic', which won the race, heading for home; the 'Idler' is in second place as the 'Dauntless' is preparing to round the mark. Britisher James Ashbury brought over his schooner 'Cambria' in the name of the Royal Thames Yacht Club in an attempt to "lift" the Cup. This, his first unsuccessful challenge to the American-held title, created tremendous public interest in the race and contributed greatly to the importance which yachtsmen have shown in the contest ever since.
