Sign Up J Gould Litho Pharomachrus Auriceps Golden Quetzal Bird Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Product description Rare John Gould Litho Pharomachrus Auriceps Golden Quetzal Bird Voyage of H.M.S. BeagleWe are offering this rare original hand colored lithograph named "Pharomachrus Auriceps" , Family:Trogonids ,which we believe was from his series called " Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle." Thisis a 5-part book published unbound in nineteen numbers as they were ready, between February 1838 and October 1843 .It was written by various authors, and edited and superintended byCharles Darwin, publishing expert descriptions of the collections he had made during theBeagle Voyage, Part 3, The Birds, 1838-1841 was written by John Gould (1804 1881). Gould was an English ornithologist whose lifework included forty-one lavishly illustrated volumes on birds from all over the world three thousand plates, lithographed and hand-painted. Darwin turned to Gould for help in identifying bird species collected during the voyage of theBeagle. It was Gould who told Darwin that Galapagos finches were separate species, providing Darwin with essential information leading to his development of the theory of evolution. This lithograph was drawn and colored by J Gould H C Richter, on the lower left corner,, and printed by Hullmandel Walton, lower right corner. It was published c. 1860.John Gould (1804-1881) is often considered the Audubon of Great Britain due to his well-known production of color plates of birds in the mid 19th century.Gould chose the medium of lithography after recognizing the significant advantages that lithography offers in order to skip the usual engraving step and thereby better capture his own artistic vision. Gould generally made the original sketches himself, and early on his wife Elizabeth transferred them to lithographic stones and meticulously hand-colored them. Later, Gould worked with other well-known print artists and colorists such as Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902), who is featured on this particular work. This lithograph measures approximately approximately 20" x 13". Frame measure 22.75 x 15.5". Print is behind glass. The frame is much more modern.Gorgeous colors! Excellent condition except for a few darker" spots" of discoloration. Expected normal age related light tanning throughout.Scuff on the frame especially on top.4L2zptg bx small 1L1z8L Payment Feedback Shipping Returns Payment Payment terms coming soon Feedback Feedback terms coming soon Shipping Shipping terms coming soon Returns Returns terms coming soon HomeAbout UsView all listingsContact UsShipping Copyright © 2018 EllisAntiques.
