Description: The wooden turtle is a symbol of the "Turtle Clan" - - This purple painted plaque with turtle is a decorative object. This is all wood - with a cutout turtle atop the purple circle that has a a cut out of the "Hiawatha Belt"; the symbol of the Confederacy of the Iroquois as depicted on a wampum belt made when the treaty was agreed upon. Turtle represents the turtle clan, which I think all tribes of the Iroquois have? Plaque is 6.75" diameter. The turtle is 5" and 3.5" across at widest. The confederacy symbol is 3.5" long. There is a cord loop hanger affixed to the back - so this is ready to be displayed. Made on the Iroquois Nation - in a workshop industry owned by the Iroquois and employing Iroquois citizens (former owner doesn't remember the name exactly "Iroquois Woodworking? Iroquois Wood Products?) This was made sometime prior to 1990 - former owner believes - perhaps as early as 1970??
