The centerpiece displays a raised image of the Bless Virgin Mary on one side, and an image depicting her eighteen apparitions, between Feb 11 and July 16 1858 to Bernadette Soubirous, the fourteen -year-old daughter of a miller in Lourdes, France. Following instructions from Our Lady, Bernadette dug a hole in the ground that tapped into a spring of water with healing properties. In 1862, the Catholic Church approved the apparitions for devotion. A shrine built on the site remains a popular destination for pilgrims seeking healing.
