Description: Hudson's Bay, 1940, Movie Glass Slide, Paul Muni, Gene Tierney, Vincent Price Click images to enlarge Description You are bidding on an ORIGINAL "coming attraction" Movie Glass/Lantern Slide that was designed to promote the theatrical release of the 1940, historical feature, "Hudson's Bay". This hand colored glass slide is an ORIGINAL and it is NOT a reproduction. It was created to be projected onto the movie theatre screen before the film was released to promote the "coming attraction". Some people in the movie collectible world have said, that, glass slides are much rarer than the paper poster memorabilia from the same film and are very rare pieces of film history. Format: Glass Slide: 3 1/4" x 4" Plot Summary: A trapper, Pierre Esprit Radisson (Paul Muni), and his friend, nicknamed "Gooseberry" (Laird Cregar), hope to open a trading post in the Hudson's Bay region of northeastern Canada in the year 1667. They meet the jailed Lord Edward Crewe (John Sutton), a nobleman from England who has been banished from that country by King Charles II (Vincent Price). They manage to free Edward, who funds their expedition, beginning in Montreal, designed to further free trade with the Indians and make Canada a more united land. Barbara Hall (Gene Tierney) is the sweetheart of Edward and her brother, Gerald (Morton Lowry), is thrust upon them after the explorers travel to England to seek the king's favor. Prince Rupert (Nigel Bruce) helps get Edward back in the king's good graces. Charles II is open to the idea of a trading post, provided he is personally brought 400,000 pelts. Gerald creates trouble in Canada as soon as the new Fort Charles trading post is established. His actions incite violence among the Indian natives, who demand he be punished. Over the king's objections and to Barbara's horror, Radisson and his associates permit Gerald to be sentenced to death by a firing squad. But once the gravity of her brother's misdeeds become clear to her, and with the flourishing of the Hudson's Bay trading post, Barbara forgives her love Edward while his partners Radisson and Gooseberry celebrate their success. Trivia: In Canada, the film was heavily promoted by the Hudson's Bay Company through its retail stores. George MacDonald Fraser wrote in 1988, "Hudson's Bay paid the penalty for being ahead of its time; critics found it boring, and one described it as 'a cock-eyed history lesson' which, overall, it certainly is not." MacDonald goes on to say of Vincent Price in the role of the King, "Here was an actor who looked reasonably like Old Rowley, and combined the languid style with the athletic presence - one could imagine Price walking ten miles a day for the fun of it as King Charles did." Some of his movies include: Valiant (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Scarface, I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), The Good Earth, Black Fury (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Hudson's Bay, The Life Of Emile Zola (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Angel on My Shoulder, The Story Of Louis Pasteur (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), and Juarez. He became disenchanted with Hollywood, and pretty much left in the early 1940s to perform on the Broadway stage, where he originated the lead role in "Inherit the Wind". He returned to the screen for one last triumph in The Last Angry Man (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film). He passed away in 1967 at the age of 71. More Info on Gene Tierney: Gene Tierney was born in Brooklyn in 1920 to a wealthy family, and she became a stage actress, but this tall (5'7" actress) who was very beautiful (and could act!) was soon "discovered" by Darryl F. Zanuck (who had a thing for beautiful young actresses). She made 9 movies in 1941 and 1942 alone. Her best two roles (and most memorable) came in 1944 and 1945, when she played the leads in Laura and in Leave Her To Heaven (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film). Her personal life was very troubled. She had many failed marriages and relationships (including Oleg Cassini, Tyrone Power Jr., John Kennedy, and others), a mentally handicapped daughter (Tierney was pregnant when exposed to rubella by a fan who broke quarantine), and suffered from depression, and she was treated with electroshock therapy. She passed away in 1991 at the age of 70. More Info on Laird Cregar: Laird Cregar was an actor in the 1940s who portrayed some of the most memorable screen villains of that era. Some of his movies include: The Gentlemen from West Point, This Gun for Hire, and Lodger. Sadly, Cregar passed away in 1944 of a heart attack after going on a crash diet, losing over a hundred pounds before his untimely passing. More Info on John Sutton: John Sutton was primarily a supporting actor from 1930s to the 1960s. Some of his movies include: The Adventures of Robin Hood, Payment on Demand, 5 Fingers, and Jane Eyre. He passed away in 1963 at the age of 54. More Info on Virginia Field: Virginia Field was an English actress from the 1930s to the 1960s. Some of her movies include: The Merry Widow, Waterloo Bridge, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and The Earth Dies Screaming. It has been said that Field had the talent to be a top film star, but she was known for being opinionated, which unfortunately affected her career. Reportedly, David O. Selznick made a pass at her, and Virginia clubbed him over the head with a decanter! Field passed away in 1992 at the age of 74. More Info on Vincent Price: Vincent Price (actually "Vincent L. Price Jr.") was a legendary actor from the 1930s to the 1990s. He is best remembered for his contributions to the horror genre, and some of his movies include: The Fly, Laura, The Ten Commandments, Theater of Blood, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, The Last Man on Earth, and Edward Scissorhands. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 82. More Info on Nigel Bruce: Nigel Bruce was a Mexican-born English actor from the 1920s to the 1950s. He is best known as Doctor Watson in the long-running Sherlock Holmes movie series opposite Basil Rathbone. Some of his other movies include: World For Ransom, Limelight, and Rebecca. He passed away in 1953 at the age of 58. More Info on Darryl F. Zanuck: Darryl Francis Zanuck (September 5, 1902 – December 22, 1979) was an American film producer and studio executive; he earlier contributed stories for films starting in the silent era. He played a major part in the Hollywood studio system as one of its longest survivors (the length of his career was rivaled only by that of Adolph Zukor). He earned three Academy Awards as producer for Best Picture during his tenure, but was responsible for many more.
