Description: PLEASE VIEW PHOTOS CAREFULLY. The Iliad in full, Books 1-24, I-XXIV, α - ω, or Α -Ω This copy of the Iliad was published in London in 1776. That is, this edition of Homer's Iliad was published at the same time as the Decleration of Independencen was being written. The publication information, as well as every left-facing page is in LATIN; every right-facing page is the matching GREEK. (There is NO ENGLISH in this edition, which is notable because Alexander Pope translated the Iliad at the turn of ther century, and his English translation dominated the markets for decades to come). It was published privately for the names at the bottom of the title page: D. Midwinter, B. Sprint, A. Bettesworth & C. Hitch, B. Motte, A. Ward, & T. Longman. So, too, it would have been privately bound in a workshop for the specific patron. This was not uncommon in the 18th Century. The final page of the book (in LATIN) is a catalogue of the library of these same names; it is likely, therefore, that these London gentlemen were academics or scholars, specializing in Greek language and studies. Please see photos again. The front and rear cover of the leather binding are torn or ripped from the rest of the binding, and are not included in any fashion. That means: the front page/title page serves as the front cover, the back page/the catalogue page serves as the back cover, and the spine is the original backstrip of the leather binding, with HOMERI ILIAS serving as the title in faded gild. The binding between the block or leaves of the pages and this spine and backstrip is still very secure. While it is unforturnate to not have the book "complete," it is remarkable that we have as much as we do: that is, a functioning spine and the entire text in full readability. If one wishes -- though it is not recommended -- one could succesfully rebind this copy. The individual pages have some obvious chipping along the edges and close to the exteriors where they have no binding to protect them. Also some small tears, denting, and creasing along the corners, but this can be dealt with with a careful touch. Foxing, browning, and some minor occurences of light moisture damage, manifesting as a darker stain along the border of a page, are apparent. If purchased, the book will be wrapped in undyed canvas and then several sheets of packing paper, and packed safely. Thank you for yuur keen interest. As always, offers (and questions) are welcome.
