Description: In researching the person, "GW Applegate" in the letter, I've learned that there is a community in Sacramento called "Applegate" and the son of the original settler's name is George W. Applegate (or GW Applegate). Additionally, there is an area 2.5 miles away called "John Brown Flat". In my opinion, there's way too many coincidences for these 2 cities to not be named after both of the individuals mentioned in the letter. The letter reads as follows: Mr. Wilcoxson Dear Sir; I congratulate you in the hopes of being able to live long enough to circumvent G.W.A. in another of his fraudulent schemes- It has been his Study for years how to beat Jeff- and in doing so he has called to his aid some almost as bad as himself- The eulogy upon John Brown's death was written by himself- In that article he recites incidentally (of course) that John Brown was associated with Mr G W Applegate in many enterprises and that said Brown was in every sense an honest man etc.etc. Now John Brown's Body lies mouldering in the ground - whilst G.W.'s encumbers the surface- John Brown as an honest man and John Applegate as Executor without Bonds- looks important on paper- But the Devil can put on fine clothing and envelop his Servants in the like- at the same time the smell of Sulphur is too much of a factor to admit of disguise- Scarcely anyone conversant with his antecedents and the methods being adopted to corral the whole thing of Brown's but that has seen he meant to encompass the whole thing wishing his greedy hands, and the culmination was to be when he sold the property as per ad- Then John Brown's Mistress would have realized the extent of friendship of G.W.A- most clearly- some people and also GW himself thought you would not see it in time- Now he has certainly already appropriated horses and other property and taken it and them away up to his house or somewhere and perhaps unbeknown to the residents of the premises and ought to be made to account for the same. He must have realized something from the horses for a few days before he could not pay a little bill to a hired man and soon after the horses went up to his place he exhibited a number of 20's- The neighbors hope you will persevere and succeed in preventing his playing out the fraud as he had planned it- Very respectfully, An Observer The item(s) shown in the photos is exactly what is included.
