Description: Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket has a few light scratches and bumps, as well as a little wavy in parts of the top - no tears or marks. Hardcover looks New - a single small bump in the middle of the back cover. Front inner cover has three small circular stains on the left side (only significant defect of the book). Back inner cover clean. A tiny two millimeter long stain on the 'bottom end' of the 'text block'. Pages have a light/subtle color fading around the edges (camera photos accentuate it much more than it really is). Some pages with full page image prints have slight color imprinting onto the white margin edges of the opposite page - page with title "Artists and Professional Identity" (unnumbered page 103) also has some minor, either image print imprinting from the opposite page or dirt mark, on the white margins on the top right corner (photo unfortunately doesn't show it very clearly). Page 115 has a dot and small thump mark on the lower right corner. Page 157 has 3 black dots in the lower right hand corner. Page 203 has a black ink dot on the very edge of the top right corner and a dot on the lower right. Page 209 has a pen line mark on the top right corner. No page rips. All other pages clean. The era saw the formation of great personal fortunes and the almost feverish amassing of goods and art to fill the palatial homes of the rich. The commissioning of portraits was one way for the new aristocracy to express their wealth and demonstrate their achievements, and the stunning works of art created during these years remain among the finest examples of portraiture. Lavishly illustrated with 175 portraits and period photographs, High Society brings to life the colourful personalities of the major artists and patrons of the Gilded Age, and, through essays exploring such themes as women artists and new public perceptions of the artist, provides an entertaining introduction to a significant chapter in American art."
