So the title of this scarf translates to "Saddle-cloths of France and India". In this design we have illustrations of the various saddle cloths used on elephants in India, and on horses in France. Designed by Philippe Ledoux in 1959, re-issued multiple times up to 2008. Philippe Ledoux is arguably one of the most important and prolific designers for Hermes, with over 90 scarves to his credit. The Hermes factory in Pierre-Benite near Lyon has developed a highly specialized manufacturing process for these works of art in silk. Lengths of material as long as a football field are placed on huge platforms where screening application of each individual dye color is meticulously performed. The arduous process of applying each color individually is time consuming and expensive, often requiring 40-50 applications. After printing, the lengths of silk are hung to dry the dyes, then go through a process for washing, smoothing, and cutting. Seamstresses then hand stitch the hems. The complex printing and production process for Hermes scarves enable an almost endless range of possible colors, resulting in the lovely final product worthy of the women who wear them.
