HeNe Laser Tubes - Many Types - Teaching, Research, Modes, Stabilized, Zeeman

Description: This listing is for GUARANTEED TESTED WORKING (unless specifically noted otherwise) bare glass HeNe laser tubes of various types. All are "hard-sealed" which means that despite their actual age, they do not decay on the shelf or need periodic petting (running) to keep healthy. (Not all the available tubes listed here are shown in the main photo.) HeNe laser power supplies for most of these are available in other listings, as well as complete laser kits including the tube, HeNe laser power supply, and DC power pack. Or ask if you don't see it. If what you really want is a laser head (glass tube enclosed in an aluminum cylinder), see listing #304346418408 as well as others of mine. Lengths are approximate. If it's critical, I can measure them. The beam divergence for most of the 6 inch tubes is ~8 mR by design. It's a feature, not a bug. ;-) The divergence can be reduced by adding a suitable lens at the output. Something like a 4" focal length positive lens an inch or two from the output will do it. Most of the others have near minimum divergence for the beam diameter which is typically 1.0 to 2.7 mR, though no real laser is like a light saber. ;-)Suitability for stabilized and/or Zeeman applications is noted for each. Those in the first block are used unless otherwise noted but will work as described with a compatible power supply. All output powers listed are actual measurements. They are the same tubes found in some of my HeNe Laser Kits. Used tubes may have some brown deposits in the bore which don't affect operation but do indicate they have been run awhile. Some may have one or more small chips on one of the mirrors that don't affect anything but appearance. Fine sandpaper (e.g., 400-600 grit) can be used to remove the chips but there is a small risk of the vibration breaking the seal so not recommended.Tube marked "End of Life" are only guaranteed to look like tubes. ;-) Most in descriptions. Red 633 nm 4-3/4" 0.4-0.7 mW Random Polarized: These are new/NOS Spectra-Physics tubes that meet or exceed output power specifications (0.4 mW spec), start instantly and run reliably on 3.2-3.5 mA current. Priced by power. These are very nearly the smallest HeNe tubes that were ever produced commercially and are extremely cute! ;-) Red 633 nm 4-3/4" >0.2 mW Random Polarized: Similar to above but lower power. These are definitely eye-safe. ;-) Use for alignment laser or as laser lamp with over half the bore exposed. Nice bright cheerful discharge. Note: Small chip on mirror, does not affect lasing.Red 633 nm 4-3/4" >0.25 mW Random Polarized MULTIMODE: Similar to above. But due probably to a bad recipe, this tube goes from TEM00 to TEM01 during part of mode sweep. Quite unique and funky as collectable, though perhaps of limited usefulness. ;-) Red 633 nm 4-3/4" exactly 0 mW Random Polarized: Similar to above but no output. Good for a small laser lamp where no beam is desired. With careful alignment these may even lase, but I failed miserably. Red 633 nm 4-3/4" DOES NOT LIGHT: Similar to above but no discharge and no lasing, probably leaked. Good cosmetic condition as cute conversation piece or collectable. Find and plug leak and add gas. ;-) Red 633 nm 4-3/4" tube body NO MIRRORS: Similar to above but it appears as though they were completed with mirrors, filled with gas and sealed, and then the mirrors were removed, probably because they didn't work properly. Not sealed. Good for something. Still cute. Just add mirrors and gas. ;-)Red 633 nm 9-10" >0.5 mW Random Polarized: These are Spectra-Physics, Siemens, or JDS Uniphase tubes that may or may not meet output power specifications but are healthy, start instantly and run reliably at 3.5 mA current, though maximum power occurs at around 4.5 mA. Red 633 nm 9-10" >0.2 mW Random Polarized: This is a JDS Uniphase tube that is low power but starts instantly and run reliably at 3.5 mA current, though maximum power (what there is of it) occurs at around 4.5 mA. Red 633 nm 9-10" >0.9 mW Random Polarized: These are Spectra-Physics, Siemens, or JDS Uniphase tubes that meet or exceed output power specifications (1.0 mW or lower spec), start instantly and run reliably at 4.5 mA current. Red 633 nm 9-10" >1.0 mW Random Polarized: These are Spectra-Physics, Siemens, or JDS Uniphase tubes that meet or exceed output power specifications (1.0 mW or lower spec), start instantly and run reliably at 3.5 mA current. Red 633 nm 6" >0.7 mW Random Polarized: These are mostly Siemens LGR-7643s and are high mileage tubes but still exceed output power specifications (0.5 mW spec), start instantly and run reliably at the default 3.5 mA current.Similar to above but require more than 3.5 mA. Red 633 nm 6" >0.5 mW Random Polarized High Dropout: These are mostly Siemens LGR-7643s and are high mileage tubes (thus the low price!). While the output power meets or is above spec (most are greater than 0.7 mW), the required operating current is 3.75 to 4.0+ mA, which is above the rated current of 3.5 mA. With a suitable power supply, they should behave just like much more expensive tubes and last however long you retain an interest in this stuff or for the duration of your thesis research. No returns on these.Red 633 nm 6" >1.0 mW Random Polarized High Dropout TESTED FOR Zeeman behavior: Similar to above and requires 3.75 to 4.0+ mA to run stably but tested to be suitable for Zeeman experiments. Thus the higher price. No returns on these.Red 633 nm 6" >0.9 mW Random Polarized High Dropout TESTED FOR Zeeman behavior: Similar to above but the minimum output power is 0.9 mW. No returns on these.Red 633 nm 6" >0.8 mW Random Polarized High Dropout TESTED FOR Zeeman behavior: Similar to above but the minimum output power is 0.8 mW. No returns on these.Red 633 nm 6" >0.7 mW Random Polarized High Dropout TESTED FOR Zeeman behavior: Similar to above but the minimum output power is 0.7 mW. No returns on these. The typical spec for a compatible power supply for the 4-3/4 inch tubes is 3.0-3.5 mA and for the 6 inch tubes would be 3.5 mA, both at 1.5 to 1.7 kV. The high dropout tubes may require a bit more current to be stable though most will be happy on 3.75 mA though a few may require 4+ mA Red 633 nm NEC GLT 165 >0.8 mW Linearly Polarized: These tubes were removed from HeNe laser-based Pioneer LaserDisc players and have been tested for output power. They are '"hard-sealed" so even though >35 years old, they do not decay on the shelf and will be retested prior to shipment. These have more interesting construction than the typical modern HeNe, being mostly glass. While some of these would be suitable to replace a defective tube in a LaserDisc player, the alignment requires specialized procedures and optical instruments. I do have complete slider assemblies for some Pioneer models with good tubes available. Ask if interested.Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 1.3-1.5+ mW New/NOS but Slightly Multi-Spatial Mode Random Polarized: The design formula or manufacturing parameters were incorrect so there are small off-axis spatial modes during part of mode sweep. These tubes should work fine with an STP locking adapter but may result in additional modes each with an amplitude of a few percent of the main mode when locked, especially if locked at lower power. Therefore, they are NOT recommended as replacements in a commercial instrument unless it is known that the weak additional modes would not be a problem. But they can be used for experimental purposes. First come first serve for highest power.Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 0.9-1.1+ mW New/NOS but these are Flippers: The wrong mirrors may have been installed so there are not suitable for a mode stabilized HeNe, at least not easily. The polarizations swap during mode sweep, but they can be used for experimental purposes. These tubes should be fine for use in a two frequency Zeeman laser with a split frequency up to 2.5 MHz or more using an HP magnet. First come first serve for highest power. Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 >0.9 mW Random Polarized suitable for use in a Mode Stabilized HeNe laser: These are high mileage tubes pulled from Melles Griot 05-STP-910 lasers. They are slightly low power (new would typically be >1.2 mW) but run stably at the default current of 4.0 mA. They are NOT recommended as replacements but can be used for experimental purposes. Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 >0.7 mW Random Polarized suitable for use in a Mode Stabilized HeNe laser: These are high mileage tubes pulled from Melles Griot 05-STP-910 lasers. They are low power (new would typically be >1.2 mW) but run stably at a current of 4.5-5 mA. They are NOT suitable as replacements but can be used for experimental purposes. No returns on these. Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 >0.6 mW Random Polarized suitable for use in a Mode Stabilized HeNe laser: Similar to above but lower power. No returns on these. Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 END OF LIFE. These have been essentially run into the ground. They may not light, and if they do will require very high current, and the output, if any, will be low. Use for wall decorations or high tech art. No returns on these.Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 END OF LIFE LOT OF 5. Similar to above. Red 633 nm 5.75" Melles Griot 05-LHR-704 New/NOS but up to air and DEAD. The cathode-end frit seal has a micro-crack caused by testing with a bad power supply. These probably haven't been run for more than a few minutes total. Aside from the micro-crack and lack of gas, they are in perfect condition and would be great to practice refilling HeNe tubes since their mirrors are aligned, they are known to have worked at full power, and everything inside is new. Just add TorrSeal™ and gas. ;-) No returns on these.Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-092 END OF LIFE. LOT of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 pending availability. These have been essentially run into the ground. They may not light, and if they do, they may require very high current, and the output, if any, will be low or exactly 0 mW. Use for wall decorations or high tech art. The HR mirror should be good and the OC mirror is probably good. Use for other red laser projects. No returns on these and I'm not hand-selecting them for most photons, sorry.Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 END OF LIFE. LOT of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 pending availability. Similar to above but the Zygo tubes have a better chance of still producing useful output being stable at normal operating current compared to the Melles Griot 05-LHR-092s. These typically light and produce more than 1 mW but that is not guaranteed. No returns on these and I'm not hand-selecting them for most photons, sorry. Red 633 nm 9.5" Siemens LGR-7641 >1.0 mW Random Polarized: This was a popular barcode scanner tube back in the 1980s. Red 633 nm 9.5" Spectra-Physics 088-1 >1 mW Random Polarized: This was a popular barcode scanner tube back in the 1980s. Red 633 nm 9.5" Spectra-Physics 088-2 >2.5 mW Random Polarized suitable for use in a Mode Stabilized HeNe laser including repair of the Spectra-Physics 117 or 117A (frequency-stabilized mode only). Red 633 nm 9.5" Spectra-Physics 088-3 >3.0 mW Random Polarized suitable for use in a Mode Stabilized HeNe laser including repair of the Spectra-Physics 117 or 117A (frequency-stabilized mode only). New/NOS. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-092 >2.0 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are well used and below spec (rated 3 mW) and still run but are NOT recommended for repairing lasers or DIY Mode Stabilized lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.5 mA at 2 kV. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-092 >2.5 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are well used but still close to spec (rated 3 mW) and have a lot of life left but are NOT recommended for repairing lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 1.9 kV. These should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-092 >3 mW Random Polarized. These tubes meet spec (rated 3 mW) and have a lot of life left but are NOT recommended for repairing lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 1.9 kV. These should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers.Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-092 >3.5 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are like new greatly exceeding spec (rated 3 mW) and may be used for repairing lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 1.9 kV. These should be also be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-088 >3.5 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are new/NOS or very close and way overspec (rated 2 mW) but are NOT recommended for repairing a commercial stabilized laser because they are flippers. Typical power supply requirements are 4.5 mA at 1.9 kV. However, with care, they should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers, but must select feedback error polarity.Red 633 nm 19.3" Melles Griot 05-LHR-984 >21 mW Random Polarized Multi-Spatial Mode. These tubes are new/NOS. Beautiful funky multimode beam. ;-)Red 633 nm 23.2" Melles Griot 05-LHR-926 >21 mW Random Polarized Multi-Spatial Mode. These tubes are new/NOS but slightly low power. Beautiful funky multimode beam. ;-) Red 633 nm 9.5" REO >3.0 mW Random Polarized with Heater: These tubes are from REO stabilized HeNe lasers and have a particularly funky construction to assure well behaved mode sweep including two (2) HR mirrors and a rare earth magnet, along with the thin film Kapton heater which has a resistance of 12 ohms. Typical power supply requirements are 5-5.5 mA at 1.9 kV. They should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers providing >1.5 mW in a single mode frequency-stabilized or 1.75 mW intensity-stabilized, close to the best commercial stabilized laser performance. If nothing else, their funky construction makes them great for a high tech live sculpture. ;-)Red 633 nm JDSU/Lumentum 1022 >3.0 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are used but still way over spec (rated 2 mW) and have a lot of life remaining. Typical power supply requirements are 6.0 mA at 1.8 kV. They would be great for a DIY Mode Stabilized laser providing >1.5 mW in a single mode frequency-stabilized or 1.75 mW intensity-stabilized, close to the best commercial stabilized laser performance Note: The tube currently available may be slow start in the dark - add LED starter helper! ;-) Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 >3.5 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are used but still way over spec (rated 2 mW) and have a lot of life remaining. They may be suitable for repairing commercial lasers but I cannot guarantee that they don't suffer from the random glitch syndrome common to some Zygo laser tubes. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 2.0 kV. These should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers for course projects, experiments, and the like.Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 >3.0 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are well used but still way overspec (rated 2 mW) and have a lot of life remaining. However, they are NOT recommended for repairing commercial lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 2.0 kV. These should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers for course projects, experiments, and the like.Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 >2.5 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are well used but still overspec (rated 2 mW) and have a lot of life remaining. However, they are NOT suitable for repairing commercial lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 2.0 kV. These should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers for course projects, experiments, and the like. Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 >2.0 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are very well used but still meet spec (rated 2 mW) and have life remaining. However, they are NOT suitable for repairing commercial lasers. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 2.0 kV. These should be usable in DIY Mode Stabilized lasers for course projects, experiments, and the like. Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 >1.5 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are very very well used. Typical power supply requirements are 5.0 mA at 2.0 kV. These should be suitable for course projects, experiments, laser lamps, etc.Red 633 nm 9.5" Zygo 7702 <1.5 mW Random Polarized Low Power: These Zygo tubes do light but the power is way below spec and should be considered more for laser lamps than serious laser applications. No returns on these.Green 544 nm 18.7" Melles Griot 05-LGR-192 >1.5 mW Random Polarized. New/NOS meets spec (spec is 1.5 mW). Typical power supply requirements are 6.5 mA at 2.75 kV. May be hard start. Probably rejected due to power being too low for warranty.Green 544 nm 18.7" Melles Griot 05-LGR-192 1.4 mW Random Polarized. New/NOS slightly low power (spec is 1.5 mW). Typical power supply requirements are 6.5 mA at 2.75 kV. May be hard start. Green 544 nm 18.7" Melles Griot 05-LGR-192 <0.1 mW END OF LIFE Random Polarized. Typical power supply requirements are 6.5 mA at 2.75 kV but this one is probably higher. May be hard start. Good for high tech sculpture and not much else. Those in the next block are new/NOS or very close as noted. They are guaranteed to meet or in most cases exceed manufacturers' specifications:Red 633 nm 5-1/2" Siemens/LASOS 7651 >1.1 mW, Random Polarized: This is a new/NOS Siemens/LASOS tube with a spec current of 4.0 mA. The diameter is slightly less than 1 inch. It has cathode-end output and is intended for mode stabilized HeNe lasers and thus should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a DIY Mode Stabilized laser.Red 633 nm 5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-640 >1.25 mW (spec is 0.5 mW), Random Polarized: These are Melles Griot tubes that start instantly and run reliably. Require 4.5 mA at 1.18 kV. These are very healthy tubes. They may be for/from some type of laser micrometer. 633 nm 9.5" Aerotech OEM05R >1.0 mW Random Polarized. New/NOS unlabeled but believed to be the OEM05R but could also be the OEM1R, which are physically identical. Typical power supply requirements are 3.5-4.5 mA at 1.3 kV. This should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a DIY Mode Stabilized laser. It may be the exact replacement tube for use in the Optra Optralite Zeeman laser. 633 nm 9.5" Aerotech OEM2R >2.0 mW Random Polarized. New/NOS from around 1989 but hard-sealed tubes do not decay on the shelf. ;-) Typical power supply requirements are 4.5-5.5 mA at 1.9 kV. These should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a high power DIY Mode Stabilized laser.633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-039 >4.0 mW Random Polarized. These tubes are believed to be 05-LHR-039s but there is no label. These greatly exceed spec (2.6 mW). Typical power supply requirements are 4.5-5 mA at 1.8 kV. These should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a high power DIY Mode Stabilized laser. Red 633 nm 8.5" Melles Griot 05-LHP-058 >2.0 mW Linearly Polarized: New/NOS Melles Griot tube, tested. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-092 >3.5 mW Random Polarized. Like new Melles Griot tube tested. These greatly exceed spec (3.0 mW). Typical power supply requirements are 4.5-5 mA at 1.8 kV. These should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a high power DIY Mode Stabilized laser. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-097 >4.0 mW Random Polarized. Like new Melles Griot tube tested. These greatly exceed spec (2.0 mW). Typical power supply requirements are 4.5-5 mA at 1.7 kV. These should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a high power DIY Mode Stabilized laser. Note: Anode-end output. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-097 >2.5 mW Random Polarized. Similar to above but 2,4 nW, which exceeds spec (2.0 mW). This tube may not be suitable for a stabilized laser except with some work as it is a flipper. Note: The outer surface of the OC mirror has a small chip but it does not affect anything except appearance. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHR-099 >1.0 mW Random Polarized. This one is a flipper and NOT generally suitable for use in a mode stabilized in a HeNe laser, at least not easily. New/NOS Melles Griot tube in original box, tested. Red 633 nm 9.5" Melles Griot 05-LHP-100 >2.0 mW (spec is 1.0 mW) Linearly Polarized: New/NOS Melles Griot tube, tested. Red 633 nm 9" Melles Griot 05-LHR-120 >3.5 mW Random Polarized: New/NOS Melles Griot tube tested. These greatly exceed spec (2.0 mW). Typical power supply requirements are 6.5 mA at 1.8 kV. These should be suitable both for repairing a commercial Mode Stabilized laser as well as for a high power DIY Mode Stabilized laser.Red 633 nm 9" Melles Griot 05-LHR-120 >3.5 mW Random Polarized: Similar to above but these are flippers and not suitable for (or at least more challenging) to use in a mode stabilized laser. Installed in an angle bracket mount with short Alden cable. (Can be easily removed.) Red 633 nm 9" Melles Griot 05-LHP-120 >2.6 mW Linearly Polarized: New/NOS Melles Griot tube, tested.Red 633 nm 14" Melles Griot 05-LHR-150 >6.0 mW Random Polarized: New/NOS Melles Griot tube, tested. Red 633 nm 7" Melles Griot 05-LHR-490 >1.0 mW Random Polarized: New/NOS Melles Griot tube, tested. Note: This NOT the model commonly found in various instruments - that is the LHP version. Red 633 nm 9" Melles Griot / Hughes 3121-HP >2.2 mW Linearly Polarized: Melles Griot / Hughes tube, tested. This is the exact replacement tube for a variety of instruments like wavemeters and FTIRs.Red 633 nm 9" Melles Griot / Hughes 3121-HP >2.7 mW Linearly Polarized: Melles Griot / Hughes tube, tested. Similar to above. Red 633 nm 9" Melles Griot / Hughes 3122-H >2.8 mW Random Polarized: Melles Griot / Hughes tube, tested. Same size as above but random polarized. This may work as a replacement the linearly polarized laser in some instruments but that is not guaranteed.Red 633 nm 14" Melles Griot / Hughes 3124-HP >3.5 mW Linearly Polarized: Melles Griot / Hughes tube, tested. Like new but slightly low power (spec is 4 mW). Great for education as it is guaranteed to be Class IIIa. ;-)Red 633 nm 14" Melles Griot / Hughes 3124-HP >5.0 mW Linearly Polarized: Melles Griot / Hughes tube, tested. Like new. Similar to above but exceeds specs. If run at slightly low current, would also be Class IIIa. Red 633 nm 9.5" Siemens LGR-7642 >1.75 mW Random Polarized: New/NOS Siemens/LASOS tube in original box, tested. Red 633 nm 9.5" Siemens LGR-7649 >2.5 mW Random Polarized: New/NOS Siemens/LASOS tube in original box, tested. Red 633 nm 9.5" REO SB/2TP/30cm(HS) >2.5 mW Linearly Polarized: Resesearch Electro-Optics tube in excellent condition, tested. Red 633 nm 13.5" REO 30388 >5 mW Linearly Polarized: Funky metal-glass Research Electro-Optics tube in excellent condition, tested. One of these is over 6 mW, first come first served for highest power. Green 544 nm 8.5" Melles Griot 05-LGR-024 >0.7 mW Random Polarized DOUBLE ENDED Output: New/NOS Melles Griot GREEN 544 nm tube, tested. This produces approximately equal output from both ends of the tube. That's greater than 0.35 mW from each end for a total >0.7 mW. Rated power on these from only ONE end is 0.2 mW. This was likely a Melles Griot "Oops" and may be unique in the explored Universe. :) (WMVP) Green 544 nm 9" Melles Griot 05-LGR-120 >0.7 mW Random Polarized: Like New Melles Griot GREEN 544 nm tube way over spec power (rated 0.22 mW), tested. This was probably never actually used but I cannot be positive. (WBT) Infra-Red 1,523 nm 14" REO LHIP-0010 ~1.0 mW: Research Electro-Optics INFRA-RED 1,532 nm HeNe laser tube, tested. This would make an excellent wavelength reference for a wavemeter but a really boring laser pointer. :) THE POWER SUPPLY IS NOT INCLUDED EXCEPT AS NOTED.More detail specifications for most of these tubes are available upon request or by checking the Commercial HeNe Lasers page of Sam's Laser FAQ. A Web search should find it. International shipping via the eBay Shipping or USPS. RETURNS: Unless otherwise noted, all of these tubes are tested and guaranteed to be as described. Returns will be accepted should this be found not to be the case except as noted. Warranty is void if a tube is found to have been run on an incompatible power supply or with reverse polarity and ruined (which can be determined from a forensic analysis), or used to pound nails, run over by a fork lift or dropped down a flight of stairs. Returning a pile of broken glass and metal bits is bad form. They will be packed to withstand anything the shipping company can dish out. Thanks for looking, --- sam
