Description: Teos, Ionia | AE12 Reference: SNG Copenhagen 1460 Date: 210-190 BCE Obverse: Griffin seated to right, raising forepaw Reverse: Lyre; THIΩN to right, horse's hoof to left; all within linear square Mint: Teos, Ionia Size: 12.1 mm Weight: 1.51 grams A scarce bronze coin featuring the mythological griffin. Teos was a flourishing ancient seaport, said to be the birthplace of Dionysus, god of entertainment, art and wine. During the third century BCE, the people of Teos constructed the largest temple dedicated to the Dionysian cult in the ancient world. Actors and musicians flocked to Teos and mixed with the priests of Dionysus’ temple who themselves were theatrical actors. Over time, Apollo, another god of music and dance, also gained prominence in Teos. Griffins were the mythological creatures said to pull the chariot of Apollo. By portraying a griffin and lyre on this coin, the people of Teos are advertising their status as a city of the arts. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
