Description More world premiere symphony recordings for Havergal Brian fans! In this programme, Martyn Brabbins and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra continue their Havergal Brian series for Dutton Epoch with one of Brians most delightful scores, Wine of Summer, the fifth symphony of 1937. The eloquent baritone soloist is Roderick Williams, the orchestral detail beautifully realised in Dutton Epochs recording. Brians two more powerful later symphonies, No. 19 (1961) and No. 27 (1966-67), make a striking, even heroic contrast, while the ebullient and tuneful Festal Dance of 1908 completes the programme and receives an irrepressible reading. Track listing: 1. Festal Dance (1908) / 2. Wine of Summer (Symphony No. 5) (1937) / Symphony No. 19 in E minor (1961) 3. i Allegro spiritoso e con anima e leggiero 4. ii Adagio Allegretto 5. iii Con anima e giocoso / Symphony No. 27 in C minor (1966-67) 6. i Lento Allegro giocoso e marcato sempre Moderato 7. ii Lento ma non troppo 8. iii Allegro con anima. This CD is a high-resolution Hybrid SACD [Super Audio CD], but is compatible with all CD players. REVIEWS Three more Brian symphonies Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2015 With this Dutton recording of Brian's Symphonies Nos. 5, 19, 27 (along with the recent Naxos recording of Nos. 6, 28, 29, 31), we have almost arrived at a completed cycle. It is many years since Marco Polo's aborted attempt to record the full cycle, but now, by hook or by crook, we are almost there - one more CD should do it! This current offering includes 'The Wine of Summer' - Brian's only symphony for solo voice and orchestra. The title refers to the poem by Lord Alfred Douglas which Brian chose as his text. The poem, as might be expected, has a rather languorous feel to it, for which Roderick Williams' distinctively mellow baritone voice is admirably suited, but Brian's music flits in and out of this prevailing mood, and there are moments of dissonance as well as lyricism. The full text is included with the liner notes. The other two symphonies on offer here are the product of Brian's famous Indian summer. Written almost twenty-five years after No. 5, the Symphony No. 19 is more characteristic of the late Brian, with its typical marches, gruff good humour mingled with tender lyricism, and orchestral colour. No. 27 is a more weighty affair, containing a heady mix of moods, tempos and dynamics, with an important role for the flute. Brian himself, in fact, described the instruments as being employed rather like 'dramatis personae'. At the heart of the work is a lyrically sustained lento, while the outer movements are decidedly animated. Perhaps more familiar to Brian fans is the filler on this CD, 'Festal Dance', which basically 'does what it says on the tin'. It is a product of the composer's first maturity, and was originally intended as a movement in a 'Fantastic Symphony' which was abandoned as such, so that Festal Dance was retained as a work in its own right. On this recording the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is conducted by Martin Brabbins - and who better than the man who was at the helm for that magnificent performance of Brian's mighty Gothic Symphony on that memorable night at the Proms on 17th July 2011? Certainly not the Brian of the `Gothic'. But still great. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2018 I was lucky to be at the performance in Alexandra Palace in 1976 (Brian Rayner-Cook) and am glad now to own a CD of an excellent performance, and in better acoustics. This symphony marked a turning point in Brian's musical career. Such a contrast from the large-scale orchestral and choral symphonies 1-4 although those have their own attraction for me.(and at last the Gothic got a Prom). Malcolm MacDonald calls this work `austere' and I can't better the description. Impressionistic it isn't. And I can still remember the sound of that musical spider from 40 years ago. Beautiful Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 June 2015 Oh - a lifetime (well since 1978) of following recordings of this composer's music and this one is a brilliant addition to the catalogue - not always easy on the ear, and never fleet of foot, this man wrote from his heart and his music repays repeated listenings - took me over 30 years to "get" him - worth the purchase if you have any interest in anything from Bach to Barclay James Harvest !!! I wish you well Something of real interest! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2015 Another very welcome addition to the recordings of the music of this remarkable British composer. Excellent performances! Good, also, to have the text of the "Wine of Summer" (Symphony No.5) included in the booklet. Well done, Dutton Epoch! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 April 2015 An excellent recording of some, at times, challenging ideas. another winner Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 April 2015 Another great performance from Brabbins. He seems to really understand Brian, the music flows and develops in a way few other conductors do. The 5th is the first of the first of the one movement symphonies, the first of the more compact works, the first for a more modest orchestra but the last for voice. The word setting is very unusual but works very well. It is superbly sung and the balance is right between singer and orchestra. This is one of the tightest and easiest to follow symphonies. 19 is lighter but with a superb slow movement. Likeable and more typical HB. 27 is wonderful and offers a prominent role for solo flute, which is unusual for HB as he favoured solo violin. Hearing this with 28 and 29 on the recent naxos cd I hear a real mastery and inspiration. 27 is a brooding drama with plenty to offer the adventurous.
