HARVEY PARNELL - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 09/24/1931 - HFSID 299150 HARVEY PARNELL As Governor of Arkansas, he praises New York Congressman Hamilton Fish for promoting an organization to oppose communism, but he cannot afford to make a contribution. Typed Letter signed: "Harvey Parnell" as Governor, 1 page, 8½x11. Little Rock, Arkansas, 1931 September 24. On official letterhead to Hamilton Fish, Jr., House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. In full: "I have read carefully your letter of September 19th soliciting funds for the American Alliance, a non-profit sharing organization for the purpose of combating the revolutionary propaganda and activities of the communists and otherwise. I regret very much, and it is embarrassing for me to advise, that my personal finances are such that I am not permitted to make a contribution. My vocation is framing and as my money crop is in cotton I know you will appreciate my financial condition at this time. The activities of the American Alliance are very worthy of the highest commendation. Its purpose in carrying forward one of the highest American ideals is worthy of the best cooperation on the part of every loyal American and I know the importance of its work will be recognized. Cordially yours". Harvey Parnell (1880-1936), a farmer, small businessman and state legislator (from 1919) was Lieutenant Governor (1926-1928) and Governor (1929-1933) of Arkansas. He supported women's suffrage, Prohibition, limits on child labor, road construction and compulsory public school attendance. Normal mailing folds. Two filing holes at left. Lightly creased.
