Description: A scarce copy of an edition called the School Market Edition, published by Scholastic, Canada, by arrangement with Bloomsbury, UK. This appears to be some kind of joint edition between Scholastic, Canada, and Bloomsbury. States "This edition is only available through the school market" on the bottom of the back cover. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling (aka HP and the Sorcerer's Stone) Paperback - School Market Edition - First Printing Ontario: Scholastic Canada by arrangement with Bloomsbury, 1999 (but probably circa 2000). Printing number-line on the bottom of the copyright page from "10" down to "1". No cover price. Cover art by Thomas Taylor, featuring the well-known scene of Harry Potter coming upon Train Track 9 3/4 and the Hogwarts Express. A young wizard smoking a pipe and holding a tome is on the back. His head is on the upper spine. This appears to be the original UK text of this HP title, not the Americanized version. Scholastic logo on the bottom spine rather than the Bloomsbury or Raincoast logo. Same size as the first paperback edition, 8 x 5 x 1/2" (20 x 12 2/3 cm). Copyright stated as 1999 but probably produced in 2000 as it lists the other three HP titles including HP and the Goblet of Fire. NOTE: This is NOT a Ted Smart, Raincoast-Canadian or an Australian edition but a unique Scholastic-Bloomsbury collaboration. Very Good+: a reasonable but not perfect copy of a scarce edition, generally a nice copy. No vertical crease to spine, but slight horizontal crease at middle spine, nick to the lower left-hand front and right-hand spine, a tiny bit of wear to upper and lower right-hand corners, a small triangular crease to the upper left-hand back. Typical toning to the page edges, i.e. the text-block, vertical fold crease on the back edge (typical), and a slight gouge on the lower back. Still a scarce edition for the Harry Potter completist. Priced to sell. NOTE on the First Editions of the Harry Potter books: The true first editions/first printings of the first four Harry Potter books were issued by Bloomsbury UK from 1997 to 2000. In the early 2000's, Bloomsbury began reissuing the books in large print editions. They can be nice alternatives to the true first editions. This is in fact the only first UK hardcover printing with the original Cliff Wright artwork outside of the first hardcover edition issued in 1999 which these days is running about $1000 to $4000, depending upon which state.
