Description: You are looking at a “LIGHTNING STRIKE” BLACK WALNUT BOWL that I have signed and dated on the foot. The bowl has an 11 ¾" diameter and is 5" tall. This is NOT a food safe item! However, this item is suitable for decorative or DRY use. It could be used as a fruit bowl for items like bananas, apples, oranges, or any other item that you would typically peel or wash before eating. The item has been sanded to 600 grit then coated with a Shellac and Carnauba Wax based water-resistant finish. Finally, the item is then buffed using a 3-step process. The first buffing is done using Tripoli to remove any fine scratches or tool marks, then White Diamond to start to bring out the shine, and then buffed with pure Carnauba wax which not only protects the item but also provides a deep gloss finish. This blank was cut from a tree that was struck by lightning multiple times. A friend removed this very large Black Walnut tree from the owner’s yard because he said that it had been hit by lightning at least once a year for the previous ten years. This made him nervous and wanted the tree removed for safety. The tree was the tallest thing for quite a distance in the Raleigh plains area of Southern Ontario. He had the opportunity to ask the owner's neighbor about the frequency of the lightning strikes and the neighbor said it may not have been every year, but the tree had been definitely struck multiple times that he was aware of. I suspect that the lightning strikes may be responsible for the unusual appearance of the wood from this tree. That being the multiple colors, bark inclusions, charring, voids etc. The last couple of photos are meant to show you the intense figure and grain pattern caused by the lightning strikes. You will be shipped the exact item shown in the photos and each piece I make is signed and dated on the bottom.I have been a woodworker for over 20 years, making everything from complete custom cabinetry, to bowls, boxes, and pens on the lathe. However, due to health issues, I now only turn projects on the lathe in order to give myself something to do for the few hours a day I can stand. When you see pens or other items which have same name, or look the exact same, the chances are that they obtain their kits from the same sources that I use. Since I do not need to "make a living" at this, I can offer the same product, made with great precision, and generally offer it to you for a much lower price. I have 100% positive feedback and will always ship within 48 hours of payment using USPS Priority Mail. SHIPPING IS FREE within the United States! I accept and prefer PayPal for payment. I will allow returns within the first 30 days of receipt. Just send me an email and I will issue a return. If you have any questions or need additional photographs, please do not hesitate to ask.
