Description: Here we have a very rare CD from alt-rock godheads GUIDED BY VOICES: Crying Your Knife Away, first issued on vinyl in 1994 by the Lo-Fi Recordings label, released on CD four years later by Simple Solution, now unavailable in any format. This was GbV's first live full-length, coming out after their classic Bee Thousand LP – the album that put them over big time in the indie scene after a decade of obscurity. Guided by Voices had been churning out great music by the truckload for years by 1994, so they had songs galore to draw from for this gig. The liner notes on the enclosed insert explain the proceedings: "Bela Koe-Krompecher's 26th birthday party at Stache's in Columbus, Ohio, June 18, 1994. The party actually started at 3:00 PM in Bela's backyard. Kegs were flowing, and Pete Jamison manned the grill, while Bela's grandmother, (beer in hand), presided over the whole affair from a Lay-Z-Boy in the middle of the yard. Records were traded, lies were told, and perception was severely impaired. Around 10:00 PM the party went mobile, stumbling a few blocks away to Stache's. The drink of choice was Rolling Rock, and before GbV took the stage, at least one band member caught a nap." Whatever the circumstances, the show kicked high ass, and this CD captures it for posterity. It’s a ragged but right live record by a band who come loaded for bear, confident in the knowledge that they've got a killer new album hitting the racks in three days. They’re so confident, they’re already performing several songs from their NEXT album, Alien Lanes (which, at the time, was going to be called Scalping the Guru). If you're a serious GbV fan, ownership of Crying Your Knife Away is mandatory. This CD shows very slight wear, but looks great and plays flawlessly.
