Description: This is a unique and beautiful frame made in Germany in about 1900. It is stuffed with a scrap of German newspaper, so no question. It is closed with tacks so has been opened at least once to remove the original contents (surely not the newspaper). In fact, the glass doesn't look old. No bubbles. This is a square frame meant to display on the diagonal, a diamond. An inner frame surrounds the 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" opening. This is continuous to the corner miters, having 3 notched and 1 smooth layer. Surrounding that is another perimeter frame consisting of 4 notched and 1 smooth layer. The triangles formed by these are covered in cloth and edged with commercial gold rope-twist moulding. There are 4 tiny puncture holes through the cloth, possibly remaining from escutcheon pins attaching stamped brass ornaments or initials (these brass decorations are commonly found on German tramp art). Projecting from the middle of each side are 6-layer notched shapes reminiscent of fleur-de-lis. All-in-all a very complex design for such a small item. It may have once had a hanger or easel hinge on the back. It is in immaculate condition. I do not sell or ship internationally. Thanks. [Boston Primitive]
