These instruments almost always are extremely difficult to play and do not sound good right out of the box. There are many setup steps necessary by a highly trained luthier to achieve good tone and ease of playing.Adjusting the fingerboard for proper arching and longitudinal relief.Adjusting the nut for proper string heights and string spacing.Adjusting the pegs to ensure they work smoothly and properly and so strings can be wound in the proper location.Adjusting soundpost/ making new soundpost for proper fit for structural support and best and most even tone possible. Adjusting/ carving bridge for proper string heights, string spacing, and best tone possible.Adjusting/replacing tailpiece for best tone and lubricating string fine tune adjusters. On average, I spend 2 - 3 hours (or more depending on what is needed) doing set up on all violins - even student level instruments! This instrument has had the time it needs to fully develop in our dry environment and produce the best tone it is capable of.
