Description: This charming and rare cottage, or penny print was printed in England circa 1810. This small, original George III era engraving was published by John Fairburn (fl. 1789-1840) who was a printer and publisher of popular prints. He retailed, printed maps, charts and books for the general public. The scene is titled “Jemmy’s Farewell” and depicts a sailor leaving his distraught wife to go on a long voyage at sea. To the horizon we see a large sailing ship; near the shoreline are a group of fellow sailors mooring a small boat so they can row him out to the large ship and begin their voyage. The engraving would have been one of a pair with the remaining print titled “Jemmy’s Return.” “Jemmy’s farewell” and “Jemmy’s Return” which are variations of the popular 18th/early 19th century engravings titled “Sailor’s Farewell” and “Sailor’s Return".The engraving is housed behind old glass in a period correct reeded frame.
