In 1938, an advertising firm on behalf the now Dole Pineapple Co. invited Georgia O'Keeffe to Hawai'i to produce two paintings, without any artistic restrictions, for their national advertising campaign. During her 9-week sojourn in the Hawaiian Islands, she lived with a host family on Maui. This book recollects the heartwarming time with a then 12-year old host, Patricia Jennings, and the process of a great artist through her young eyes. O'Keeffe created 20 lush paintings of Island flora and landscapes during her stay. Reflecting on her time on Maui, O'Keeffe wrote "I enjoy this drifting off into space on an island." Years later, she added, it was one of "the best things I have done."
