Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Description: George Grosz’ Ecce Homo 1922-23 Limited Edition Ausgabe A / Deluxe Edition A / Number 35. The publisher, Malik, Berlin, offered purchasers 5 separate options. This is a rare Limited Edition Ausgabe A / Deluxe Edition A / Number 35 as inscribed in handwriting "a / 35" in red in the colophon beneath the signet of the Malik publishers (Dieses Exemplar der Ausgabe a trägt die Nr. 35). This offered portfolio contains 11 color offset lithograph prints after watercolors and 61 offset prints after pen drawings in the original ecru chamois silk-covered portfolio box with the title "George Grosz/ ECCE HOMO in gilt centered rectangle. Each reproduction is signed in pencil in the lower right in the plate margin. This copy includes a loose title sheet with colophon and index sheet, each printed on both sides. Print and reproduction by Kunstanstalt Dr. Selle & Co. A.-G., Berlin. Ecce Homo is a selected compendium of drawings by Grosz from 1915 to 1922, critical of his time and society, biting and satirical. The original Ausgabe A contained 16 lithographs after watercolors numbered in Roman numerals and 84 lithographs numbered 1-84 in loose in a silk portfolio. Following publication, Grosz was prosecuted for offending the sense of modesty and morality of the German public: accounts say 22 of the plates were confiscated and removed from the collection. This collection contains 11 of the original 16 color prints; it is missing IV, V, VI, XV and XVI. It is presumed these are the 5 color prints removed by the court after the prosecution. This collection also contains 61 of the original 84 black and white reproductions; it is missing # 10, 14, 16, 19, 22, 28, 30, 38, 42, 44, 48, 50, 57, 60, 61, 64, 67, 70, 75, 78, 79, 82 and 84. It is presumed that the missing prints are the ones removed by the court after the prosecution, plus an additional 6 prints that are unaccounted for. Each is printed on off-white paper with embossed plate margins and numbered in Roman or Arabic numerals on the lower left. Including a loose title sheet with colophon and index sheet, each printed on both sides. Dimensions: Each embossed plate is approximately 14.25 inches (36.195 cm) x 10.5 inches (26.67 cm). Two exceptions: # VIII and # IX are 13.75 inches (34.925 cm) x 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) with the print slightly off center. We have no explanation for this anomaly. 15.375 inches (39.0525 cm) x 11.25 inches (28.575 cm) x 4 inches (10.16 cm). Weight: Approximately 3 lbs.Prints in excellent condition, with the following exceptions/minor flaws (see photos): color print # I with light crease and .375 inch (0. 9525 cm) tear (within margin, not print); color print # XIII creasing on edges (within margin, not print); black and white print # 1 with light creasing at top and bottom and .25 inch (0.635 cm) tear (within margin, not print); b/w # 3 with .25 inch (0.635 cm) tear (within margin, not print); b/w # 15 with light creasing that appears to be part of printing process; b/w # 31 with light crease top left (within margin, not print); b/w # 32 with light crease on bottom (within margin, not print); b/w # 46 with light crease top left (within margin, not print); b/w # 58 with light creasing at top and bottom (within margin, not print); and b/w # 83 with light creasing at top and bottom (within margin, not print).
