Print and reproduction by Kunstanstalt Dr. Selle & Co. A.-G., Berlin. Ecce Homo is a selected compendium of drawings by Grosz from 1915 to 1922, critical of his time and society, biting and satirical. The original Ausgabe A contained 16 lithographs after watercolors numbered in Roman numerals and 84 lithographs numbered 1-84 in loose in a silk portfolio. Following publication, Grosz was prosecuted for offending the sense of modesty and morality of the German public: accounts say 22 of the plates were confiscated and removed from the collection. This collection contains 11 of the original 16 color prints; it is missing IV, V, VI, XV and XVI. It is presumed these are the 5 color prints removed by the court after the prosecution. This collection also contains 61 of the original 84 black and white reproductions; it is missing # 10, 14, 16, 19, 22, 28, 30, 38, 42, 44, 48, 50, 57, 60, 61, 64, 67, 70, 75, 78, 79, 82 and 84. It is presumed that the missing prints are the ones removed by the court after the prosecution, plus an additional 6 prints that are unaccounted for. Each is printed on off-white paper with embossed plate margins and numbered in Roman or Arabic numerals on the lower left. Including a loose title sheet with colophon and index sheet, each printed on both sides. Dimensions: Each embossed plate is approximately 14.25 inches (36.195 cm) x 10.5 inches (26.67 cm).
