Haimsohn anonymously wrote The Gay Coloring Book and My Trip Around the World, comedic picture books illustrated by Dom Orejudos (a.k.a. "Etienne"), depicting the social and sex lives of contemporary gay men living in the Village. He also wrote and illustrated Modern Fairy Tales: Autobiography of a Camp under the pseudonym Peter B. Luvvly. In 1966 he co-wrote with Robin Miller the book and libretto for the musicl Dames at Sea. The reader is instructed to colour his favourite suit ‘chartreuse’ and as for Percy’s apartment ‘color the drapes orange, the lamp peach and the rug cherry. Do it up fruity.’ The following pages walk the reader through an array of all-male spaces and cruising spots such as the gay bar, the park, the bathhouse and the alley, with the suggestion to ‘color it dangerous’. He was born in St. Louis and served in the Navy in World War II. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, where he had his first poetry published in the student literary journal. A resident of Greenwich Village since 1952, he was a professional photographer known as Plato. Along with artists George Quaintance and Touko Laaksonen ("Tom of Finland") – with whom he became friends – Orejudos' leather-themed art promoted an image of gay men as strong and masculine, as an alternative to the then-dominant stereotype as weak and effeminate. With his first lover and business partner Chuck Renslow, Orejudos established many landmarks of late-20th-century gay male culture, including the Gold Coast bar, Man's Country bathhouse, the International Mr. Leathercompetition, Chicago's August White Party, and the magazines Triumph, Rawhide, and Mars.
