Graphite on Paper, 8”X 5.5” PROVENANCE The art was acquired via a premier auction house who received the art from the Garth Williams Estate. I later met Garth Williams’ wife, daughter and granddaughter. Garth Williams was a noted illustrator of the preeminent titles in children’s literature during the mid-to-late 1900s. Williams illustrations define books including the Little House Series, Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), The Cricket In Times Square, and The Rescuers (1959). Many of his original illustrations from these book have sold are record prices including a Charlotte’s Web piece which raised $155,000 at auction in 2010, and other works which sold for 10k-70k each. Other notable auction 2010-2012 pricing of Williams original illustrations include sales of the original artwork for the interior pages of Stuart Little which also averaged in the $15,000 range per piece. I specialize in first edition rare books and original illustration art. Some 60 pieces were on loan from White Star to the Garth Williams: Illustrator of the Century curated by Leonard Marcus and brought by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature from 2017-2020 and recently approached by a Laura Ingalls Wilder museum for an loans for an anniversary exhibit.
