Description: THANK YOU FOR VISITING THIS AUCTION.This is ORIGINAL ART, not a print nor reprint. This is ONE OF A KIND.GARFIELDNationally Syndicated Daily Newspaper StripPublication Date: November 11, 2010"National Stupid Day"CONTROVERSIALVeteran's DayOUTRAGENational Stupid Day is the holiday that was invented in remembrance of the spider that Garfield squashed on November 11, 2010. The strip angered veterans because it was published on Veteran's Day (implying to some people that veterans were stupid), causing Jim Davis to make an apology.ORIGINAL ART Published Original Comic ArtAutographed by JIM DAVISSigned on the Black Mat in Gold InkMATTED READY TO FRAME !!!Mat Size: 9" x 19"3 Panel Illustration Rendering Size: 4" x 14"STANDARD COMIC STRIPILLUSTRATION BOARDDESCRIPTIONThis original artwork was acquired directly from Jim Davis' Garfield website, Garfield Collectibles on 11/12/10 the day after the strip was published when all of the national news coverage brought this comic strip to a high profile controversial level.I am the original owner who purchased it direct for $2,000, which is what the store sells or sold at the time, all Garfield daily comic strip original artwork for. From what I understand, and this is probably easily confirmed with a little research, is that Jim Davis is the creator of Garfield, but his involvement with the comic strip has evolved through the years, where he originally wrote and fully illustrated the daily comic strip, but then as the years went by, began to script and do the layouts (preliminary sketched artwork) and have artists on staff follow his storyboards to embellish the art and ink it to what becomes the final artwork. I have heard within the past few years, the Garfield comic strip is now being scripted by Jim Davis, but all illustration whether by Jim Davis or artists on staff are done digitally, so that all current Garfield comic strips no longer are created by hand and no original artwork exists for current strips. This artwork is autographed by Jim Davis (on the black mat in gold ink) with his authentic signature, direct from his website store. If you search the term "Garfield National Stupid Day" you'll find all of the articles in 2010 from November 11th, as well as the days to follow with news and reactions to the controversial fallout from this strip. It was somewhat scandalous where Veterans and the public had taken offense to the 11/11/10 Garfield comic strip that appeared on Veteran's Day that ended with a gag referred to as "National Stupid Day" on the day of remembrance of our US Military Veterans. ‘Garfield’ Creator Apologizes for ‘National Stupid Day’ CartoonBY DAVE ITZKOFF NOVEMBER 12, 2010 11:55 AM 'Garfield' creator apologizes for ill-timed Veterans Day comic stripBy the CNN Wire StaffNovember 12, 2010 10:30 a.m. ESTGarfield may hate Mondays, but Thursday wasn’t a banner day for that cartoon cat, either. Jim Davis, the creator and author of “Garfield,” apologized for a comic strip published on Thursday that some readers said was insensitive to the Veterans Day holiday. In the comic strip a spider warns him that if Garfield squishes him with a newspaper, the spider “shall become famous” and “they will hold an annual day of remembrance in my honor.” The final panel shows a gathering of spiders in a spider classroom, being asked by a spider teacher, “Does anyone here know why we celebrate ‘National Stupid Day’?”After some online commenters complained that the cartoon seemed to be mocking Veterans Day, Mr. Davis wrote that the comic strip “absolutely, positively has nothing to do with this important day of remembrance.”Mr. Davis’s statement continued:Regarding today’s Garfield comic strip, it was written almost a year ago, and I had no idea when writing it that it would appear today — of all days. I do not use a calendar that lists holidays and other notable days so when this strip was put in the queue, I had no idea it would run on Veterans Day. What are the odds? You can bet I’ll have a calendar that lists everything by my side in the future. My brother Dave served in Vietnam. My son James is a Marine who has had two tours of duty, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. You’d have to go a long way to find someone who was more proud and grateful for what our veterans have done for all of us.Mr. Davis concluded, “Please accept my apologies for any offense today’s Garfield may have created. It was unintentional and regrettable.” 'Garfield' creator apologizes for ill-timed Veterans Day comic stripBy the CNN Wire StaffNovember 12, 2010 10:30 a.m. EST Jim Davis, the creator of the widely-syndicated "Garfield" comic has issued an apology for an ill-timed strip that ran on Veterans Day.The strip, which appeared in newspapers nationwide Thursday, shows a spider's thoughts as Garfield the cat is about to crush it with a rolled-up newspaper."If you squish me, I shall become famous!" reads the thought bubble in the strip's first panel."They will hold an annual day of remembrance in my honor, you fat slob," the spider continues, referring to the pudgy orange cat.The last panel shows the spider dangling above a teacher's desk while he addresses a group of other spiders: "Does anyone here know why we celebrate 'National Stupid Day?'"Davis called the strip's appearance on Veterans Day "the worst timing ever.""The strip that runs in today's paper seems to be making a statement about Veterans Day. It absolutely, positively has nothing to do with this important day of remembrance," he said in a letter Thursday, addressed to friends, fans and veterans. The cartoonist said the strip was created almost a year ago."I had no idea when writing it that it would appear today -- of all days," he said. "I do not use a calendar that lists holidays and other notable days, so when this strip was put in the queue, I had no idea it would run on Veterans Day."Davis said his brother served in Vietnam, and his son has performed tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan."You'd Have to go a long way to find someone who was more proud and grateful for what our veterans have done for all of us," he said.Garfield debuted in 41 U.S. newspapers in 1978. In 2002, the Guinness Book of World Records declared it the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.Today, the cynical cat is a ubiquitous pop culture presence, with books and movies to his name.In his letter, Davis implied he did not intend to make the same mistake again: "You can bet I'll have a calendar that lists EVERYTHING by my side in the future."This is original artwork as shown in the photographs. If there's any glare or poor lighting, and you need additional photos or have questions, please inquire.I include photos of the front side and the back side (despite the back of artwork typically being blank and white) and some close ups to show the aesthetic beauty, granular details as well as the overall condition of the item. The color images of the final publication are just for reference only, provided for context and the published comic book is not included with this auction, it's just to provide information of where this comic art was used and how it looks in that context of any dialogue and color added in post-production (done digitally these days).I've been a seller on eBay since 1999 and, so the past 20+ years I've both bought and sold with trust and reliability as well as on CAF too.
