Description: Babar the Elephant first appeared in 1931 in the French children's book Histoire de Babar by Jean de Brunhoff. In the book, the author recounts the story that his wife Cecile had written for their children. The story tells of a young elephant, named Babar, whose mother was killed by a hunter. He escapes and leaves his jungle home to visit the big city, where he is befriended by the Old Lady, who buys him clothes and hires him a tutor. He then returns to his jungle home to find that the reining elephant king has died and Babar becomes king. He subsequently marries Celeste, has children and his adventures and stories teach elephants and readers valuable lessons.
