To learn more about us please click on our profile We would like to express our deep gratitude to the world's best specialist in portrait miniatures, Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (Switzerland), who recognized this miniature as an original work of the Franco-Swiss miniaturist, François-Joseph Desvernois. François-Joseph Desvernois was a French-born portrait miniature artist, who was mentioned as being active between the years 1768 and ca. 1810. His exact life dates still remain unclear. A certain François-Joseph is known to have studied at the Academie Royale in Paris and lived in Switzerland from 1768. It is probably the same François-Joseph Desvernois, the miniature painter from Lons-le-Saulnier, France, father of painter Joseph-Eugene Desvernois (nee in Lausanne in 1790). It is known that between 1787 and 1788 he was active in Geneva, and in 1799 - lived in Strasbourg, where he was mentioned as "Membre de l'Academie des Arts d'Helvétie". François Desvernois is mentioned again as having been active at the Courts of Baden and Hesse-Darmstadt (1803). In 1807, we find him in Milan. In 1810, he exhibited his self-portrait in Bern. He also portrayed Queen Caroline of Bavaria, Queen Frederika of Sweden, Duchess of Brunswick, Grand Duchess of Hesse, etc. Desvernois' contemporaries called him "le maître des regards melancoliques" and "le maître des profils a la manière des Bourgeois".
