Description: FRANCISCO “PANCHO” VILLA. Francisco “Pancho” Villa (1878–1923) was one of the most prominent Mexican Revolutionary generals. As one of the major and most colorful figures of the first successful popular revolution of the 20th century, Villa’s notoriety attracted journalists, photographers, and military freebooters of both idealistic and opportunistic stripes from far and wide. TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY FRANCISCO “PANCHO” VILLA CELEBRATING HIS RETIREMENT Typed letter signed by, “Francisco Villa,” celebrating his retirement by signing two portraits of himself for Archaeology Professor and Native American artifact expert Virgil Y. Russell: “Fulfilling your wishes expressed in your attentive letter of April 23, I am pleased to send you with this present the two portraits that you sent me, already signed by me. I take this opportunity to offer myself to your esteemed orders and subscribe to you my friend.” Sent shortly after acquiring a 25,000 acre hacienda in Canutillo through peace negotiations with Mexican President Aldolfo de la Huerta and only two years before Villa’s assassination. SENT SHORTLY AFTER ACQUIRING A 25,000 ACRE HACIENDA IN CANUTILLO THROUGH PEACE NEGOTIATIONS WITH MEXICAN PRESIDENT ALDOLFO DE LA HUERTA Contains one page on personal letterhead, measures 11 by 8.5 inches, created in Canutillo on June 3, 1921, and in fine condition with only light staining, a rusty paperclip mark to the top border, and paper loss to the top and bottom right corners. Three similar items signed by -Villa sold for $6,933 in September 2008, $5,777 in April 2010, and $6,991 in November 2012 at RR Auction.
