Description: A clean etching, titled "The Custody is as Barbarous as the Crime", of the early 19th century Disasters of War series by Goya (originally circa 1810-1815), this the posthumous Gazette des Beaux-Arts/ Imp. Delatre/Paris version, dating to 1867. The sheet measures 9" by 6" and the entire piece 12" by 9" as framed. Francisco de Goya de Lucientes 1746-1828 is of course one of the most famous of Spanish artists, renowned for painting and printmaking. As the Art Institute of Chicago says about their (early 19th century version) print: "The etching features a prisoner crouching with his wrists and ankles restrained. Line in addition to aquatint creates the exceedingly dark atmosphere. Goya pays special attention to the prisoner’s contorted posture, the tangled mess of his hair, and the reflection of dim light on the chains binding his arms."
