Description: Offered here is a charming, framed drypoint etching by prominent American artist Sears Gallagher, "Little Solitude", 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" (mat opening), framed to an overall size of 13 1/2" x 11 1/4", a signed artist proof (in pencil, Sears Gallagher). Light toning, bottom of mat has small water stain (well from the image); simple wooden frame has light wear, backing paper quite torn/ stained (with ID sticker of Doll & Richards, Inc., 138 Newbury St., Boston, Mass. SEARS GALLAGHER (1869-1955) was born in Boston, MA in 1869. He descended from a long line of Pilgrim ancestors, including Governor William Bradford. Gallagher was a prolific, commercially successful American artist proficient in multiple media: drawing, etching, watercolor and oil painting. His work consists largely of landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes depicting his native Boston and northern New England, especially Monhegan Island, Maine. He studied with S. P. R. Triscott and Tomasso Juglaris in the 1880s. He was known for both his etchings and his watercolors. He created his first etching in 1888. In 1911, he produced a series of Boston scenes which launched his fame as a master etcher. He was an early member of the artists colony on Monhegan Island where, beginning around 1892, he summered for more than 50 years. He is also known for his autumnal watercolors of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, staying in the fall in Jackson, NH. He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Paris Salon, the Boston City Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was represented by Doll & Richards Gallery in Boston from 1915-on. He died in West Roxbury, MA in 1955.
