Description: NEOVENATOR Possibly the UK's biggest killer dinosaur. It once roamed the areas of Southern England around 120 million years ago, preying on the herds of Iguanodon and also, I would imagine, the numerous long necked sauropods that were around at this time. It is related to the T-Rex busting Carcharodontosaurus. FOSSILS CRINOID SECTION Scyphocrinites sp. aff. elegans Information ORIGIN: AGE: Djebel Issoumour, Alnif, Morocco. Upper Silurian SIZE: This example shows a large amount of the numerous pinnules and a calyx - beautifully preserved and alas, the picture does not show the minute detail that you can see to the individual pinnules - very fine detail! A nice specimen. It measures 7.5 cm by 7.3 cm at it's max. Although not a complete example it still still shows some fantastic intricate detail of a plant dating back 400 million years old. DETAIL: These are distinctive Camerate crinoid types from Morocco and they are large examples of the genus Scyphocrinites (Family Scyphocrinitidae). Scyphocrinites became very widespread during the Silurian/Lower Devonian with examples being found in similar aged rocks in Europe, USA, Africa and Asia. They once covered the sea floors in large colonies with the calyx acting for boyancy, the pinnules would be free floating feeding devices. Crinoids are related to starfish and echinoids rather than to creatures they are normally referred to - being sea lilies. Crinoids are not actually plants, although looking like them, they are in fact a type of echinoderm - with a five symmetry based radial system.
