Description: They were the first. The miracle before the miracle on ice. 1960 marked a time of transition. The Cold War was heating up. Television was introduced to the Olympics. Decades of Canadian hockey dominance were met by an emerging Soviet dynasty. In the middle of it all, a team of unheralded but talented Americans saw their chance for gold. Carpenters, insurance salesmen, firemen and servicemen by day, these men also happened to be America's greatest hockey players. And for two weeks in California, they were the best in the world. Together they achieved something that has still never been matched by an American hockey team: an unblemished record in an Olympiad. But for all the greatness of the 1960 US Olympic team, they remain a footnote in the history books. It's a triumph that could aptly be called a "Forgotten Miracle."Reviews:Forgotten Miracle, the new documentary of the 1960 US team that won the gold medal at Squaw Valley, is a must-have for any hockey fan. There s terrific period footage plus interviews with the Cleary brothers (Bill and Bob), the Christian brothers (Bill and Roger), goalie Jack McCartan, coach Jack Riley and others, including former Bruins coach and president Harry Sinden, who captained the Canadian squad. --John Powers, Boston GlobeHaines (director, co-producer, hockey dude) and his crew, working in conjunction with USA Hockey, are back with another excellently produced hockey documentary: "Forgotten Miracle: The Story of the 1960 Gold Medal Team." It is available on DVD. On Feb. 27, 1960, an underrated U.S. hockey team stunned the defending-Olympic-champion Soviet Union in Squaw Valley, Calif., en route to an undefeated march for Olympic gold. It's a story that has many connections with the 1980 "Miracle" team but nowhere near the publicity. This DVD helps rectify that. --John Buccigross, ESPNThe most transcendent hockey moment in the history of the United States remains, almost 30 years later (can it be so long ago?), the 1980 Miracle on Ice victory of the United States Olympic team at Lake Placid. But an earlier generation of American Olympians pulled off a similar stunning upset that has been nearly forgotten and, by comparison, remains largely unknown. The 1960 U.S. Olympic hockey team, like the 1980 team went on to do, captured the gold medal. It was the first ever won by the national team, defeating powerhouse squads from the Soviet Union, Canada and, for the gold, Czechoslovakia at the Squaw Valley Olympics. Their victory is the subject of a new DVD documentary, Forgotten Miracle, produced by J.T. Haines, Tommy Haines and Andrew Sherburne of Golden Puck Pictures, which is based in Minnesota, in association with USA Hockey and the United States Olympic Committee. Assembling a solid documentary of this victory that would go beyond on-camera recollections might have been almost as challenging as winning the medal itself. Most of these players have, like the team itself, not gotten the recognition they deserve, including Mayasich (profiled by Sports Illustrated in 1999), who is one of the great American players of all time. Forgotten Miracle hopes to change that. --New York Times
