Description: Here we have a crucial, yet too little known treasure to whet the appetites of Guided By Voices fans... the self-titled compilation CD from FIG.4, released in 1997 by the Recordhead label in 1997, now long unavailable. This pre-GBV features future members Tobin Sprout (guitar, vocals) and Dan Toomey (bass), with Robert Pollard contributing backing vocals on five tracks. This CD compiles their one-and-only 1987 album with six non-LP tracks, three of them previously unreleased. The Fig.4 sound is a rockin' pop vibe that kinda reminds us of The Shoes at times, with a sprightliness that's sure to bring a smile to your face. It's very much sans the lo-fi GBV vibe, though -- sounds like they used an actual studio to record in. So the result is somewhat more mainstream, but that doesn't diminish its hooky pleasure one whit. Guided By Voices fans will definitely want to sink their choppers into this one. It's way hard to find these days, though -- went out of print after a single pressing. You know what to do. The disc is near mint. There's nothing slick about Sprout's straightforward eight-track production, but GbV's intentional lo-fi distortions are still comfortably in the future. I was nineteen when all this was happening, and maybe anything that happens when you're nineteen acquires some of your glow. But putting on these songs I'd never heard before, and instantly knowing when they were made, is one of those experiences that keep horoscope-writers in business." ~Furialog
