Description: Ficus benjamina is a tree in the Moraceae family. A native to Australia and Asia. Some common names include weeping fig, benjamin fig, or ficus tree. It is sold in stores as just a ficus tree. It is the official tree of Bangkok. The small fruit is eaten by birds, such as the superb fruit dove and the wompoo fruit dove. This tree should be used for bonsai or open areas away from sidewalks or structures as the roots will lift anything around it. It can grow to 30 feet tall and wide. The leaves are glossy, 3-6 inches long, and oval. The bark is a light gray and very smooth. The fruits are orange-red when ripe and are just about 1 inch in diameter. It prefers to grow in full sun with average water needs. It is deer resistant. It can be used as a container tree as well. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/8" deep and tamp down the seeds. Lightly cover with vermiculite. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
