Description: Fantastic historical rare (10,000 struck) nickel DAWSON DOLLAR, ND 1969. The Medal is about 39 mm across, and weighs about 24.2 g. This is a rare medal, in the sense that at the time of this posting there was no other such medal listed on the Web. The Obverse depicts Coat of arms of Dawson City, and the Lettering reads: THE CITY OF DAWSON Y.T. / IN GOD WE TRUST / INCORPORATED JAN. 9. 1902. The Reverse depicts Prospector panning for gold in front of mountain and sunrise scene in incredibly high relief and the Lettering reads: THE LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN / DAWSON DOLLAR / REDEEMABLE / IN THE HEART OF THE KLONDIKE. A bit of history. Gold was discovered in Dawson in 1896, triggering the Klondike Gold Rush. By 1898, no less than 40,000 people called Dawson home. When the gold ran out, the population immediately fell to 8,000 in 1899 and 5,000 in 1902. The settlement was unable to maintain its official designation, and today its full name is "The Town of the City of Dawson", population 1,319. Thanks to the town's assortment of hundred-year-old buildings and spectacular natural setting, the main industry today is tourism. Your beautiful Medal will be shipped as soon as payment is received.
