Description: Essentials of Astronomy, 2nd ed. Rare 1977 edition. No text page has been apparently altered. This book is unique in that the basic physics corresponding to the astronomy is presented in sections or chapters along with the astrophysics. There are separate chapters on special relativity and general relativity very well explained at a beginning level for college students. Also included are sections explaining Newton's laws, quantum theory and electromagnetic radiation. Fundamental equations of cosmology are explained. When the first edition of this book was completed, such things as lunar landings, planetary missions, large radio telescopes, orbiting observatories, and the application of high-speed computers to astrophysical calculations were still being planned. Updates to this edition include lunar and planetary properties; the sun; the evolution of stars onto and away from the main sequence; the interstellar medium and interstellar molecules; variable stars; neutron stars, pulsars, X-ray sources, and black holes; quasars, the cosmic background radiation; and cosmology. Most of this material is gathered into a separate Part 5 at the end of the book with section headings that correspond to those in the main text.
