Type hand-set at The Riverside Press Ltd., Edinburgh from a specially cast fount, printed upon Arnold's British hand-made paper specially made and watermarked for The Navarre Society. Original full vellum bindings with gilt ruling, titling and decoration. Top edges gilt, other edges uncut. Includes an extensive biography of Montaigne, translation of all his known letters, engraved frontispiece in each volume. CONDITION: NF to borderline fine condition. Light dustsoiling (aging and dulling) of the vellum appropriate for book's age but remarkably free of soiling and rubbing. Boards free of the usual bowing seen in this edition. Text blocks square and all external & internal hinges intact. No writing, ex-libris, etc., A very clean set. DISCUSSION: An attractive edition of Montaigne's timeless essays spanning a wide variety of topics, nicely letterpress printed on a high quality Arnold's handmade paper. Best of all, the Charles Cotton English translation is modern and understandable, avoiding the badly dated John Florio translation of 1603 which is unpleasant to read.
