Description: Minty Eley's 12 Gauge Improved Patent Wire Cartridge Description: Nice original cartridge in excellent condition. This one still retains the outer paper wrapping and still has the original pull string. These "wire" cartridges were originally invented by Joshua Jenour on November 28, 1827. Charles & William Eley purchased the patent rights in 1828 and started producing the "improved wire" cartridge in 1836. This was meant to be a shot concentrator and proved very effective. There were a few of these imported during the American Civil War to be used in 10 and 12 gauge shotguns. They were produced all the way up into the early 1900's.
